Flesh and Bone

or FAB, is an independent magazine revolved around the coexistence of beauty and “ugliness” within the human condition. It celebrates the aspects of ourselves that are messy, uncomfortable, contradictory or difficult to understand.

Flesh embodies our external self; the hearts we wear on our sleeves and the essence of our being we choose to show the world. Bone on the other hand, represents everything that lies underneath: From the structures that keep us alive, the burdens we carry, and feelings we can’t articulate. The parts of ourselves we are less quick to expose or even acknowledge. Neither exist without the other, and right between the two is the sweet spot in which FAB lies.

There’s a term that encapsulates the strange, the exaggerated, and the unconventional: Grotesque. The word was originally associated with the fantastical ancient Roman paintings rediscovered during the Renaissance period, but over time it has adopted the uglier connotation we are more familiar with today. But what happens when we reframe our perspective on what it means to be grotesque? When we allow the strange to be beautiful, the uncomfortable to be meaningful, and the imperfect to be worth looking at? Flesh and Bone explores the many elements that illustrate the complexity of being. It amplifies various perspectives and experiences to create something that is as varied and contradictory as the people behind it. Flesh and bone, surface and substance, beauty and discomfort.

All of it belongs here. All of it is FAB.
